WPC Healthcare, a leading provider of data science solutions, has received the Global Annual Achievement award for Best Use of Artificial Intelligence in Food, Health and Medicine from Awards.AI.
WPC was recognized for its work in developing the Sepsis Index through the company’s Condition Awareness Platform, which leverages artificial intelligence to effectively treat sepsis by identifying it early. For decades, clinical indicators have been the accepted method of detecting sepsis. But even when they are accurate, combinations of these traditional clinical indicators don’t trigger action quickly enough. WPC creates an individual algorithm specific to each hospital or facility that matures and learns over time. The platform’s effectiveness is based on both predictive analytics and the flexibility of implementing the notification into the clinical workflow.

The Global Annual Achievement awards, now in their second year, recognize achievements within the AI community in developing new algorithms, products and services across a number of different categories and industries, as well as the work of startups and individuals. The awards are nominated and voted on by the AI community. WPC Healthcare was inspired to develop the platform by the work of the Sepsis Alliance, an organization dedicated to battling and raising awareness of sepsis. In addition to the to the AI award, WPC’s work to identify new approaches to the early identification and treatment of sepsis was published last October in the International Clinical Pathology Journal, a peer-reviewed, open access journal. The authors look at the evolving definition of sepsis over its long medical history, the controversy over the current definition of sepsis, and the development of a sepsis screening tool.
